TESTOSTERONE EFFECTS

 Does testosterone affect intelligence?

Prenatal testosterone does!

At least, it co-defines the type of intelligence someone has.

First off, you can determine your D2:D4 score to get a rough picture of how much prenatal testosterone you were exposed to as a baby.

The higher your ratio, the less testosterone you were exposed to. ‘Masculine’ males usually have a ratio around 0.93-0.96. There are more ‘masculine’ males, with scores <0.90 and there are more ‘feminine’ males with scores of 1.00 and higher, just as there are females with differing ratio scores, depending on the amount of prenatal testosterone.

High prenatal testosterone:

  • Systematic thinkers. Imagine the typical “guy” jobs. Math, IT, physics.
  • Rigid thinking. They are inflexible, and break stuff down to one and the most logical solution.
  • Aggressive, competitive, overly self-confident.
  • Convergent intelligence

Those people are more likely to be identified as gifted, because their thinking resonates with what's asked in IQ tests. They are more certain of their skill-set, are more “let's find the solution”, are more assertive and goal oriented. It's about rules and deduction. Think Sheldon from “The Big Bang Theory”, or someone with autism (high prenatal testosterone is linked to autism and Asperger’s syndrome anyway). It's all about the most logical and down to fact way.

Low prenatal testosterone:

  • Flexible and responding to everything around them.
  • Instead of breaking stuff down to one solution by deduction, they are more likely to create (creativity) more solutions to one problem.
  • They are less bounded to rules and more open to other possibilities and solutions.
  • Divergent intelligence

These people are more likely to see several solutions, instead of the logically best solution. They are creative, empathetic, and are more likely to be found on ‘humane’ and caring professions.

Testosterone in and of itself doesn't influence how smart you are, it does, however, influence your type of intelligence.

Edit:

  1. Use the right hand, not the left one.
  2. It's still being researched, just because you have high prenatal testosterone doesn't mean you won't be able to have a caring job or ice versa.
